Key Points

  • FBI agents arrested Thomas Markle, 82, at his senior living home in Lakeland, Florida, on Friday morning.
  • He faces one count of possession of child pornography, brought by the US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.
  • The Justice Department says he kept explicit photographs of himself with girls who had not yet reached puberty in two Los Angeles-area storage units rented for nearly 20 years.
  • The arrest follows an investigation in the Philippines, where his son said he found thousands of abuse images at his father’s former home in Cebu.
  • Markle denies the claims, calling them “sick lies”. He has not yet entered a plea and is due before a federal judge in Tampa on Friday.

Thomas Markle, the 82-year-old father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested by federal agents in Florida on Friday, charged with possessing child sexual abuse material.

What happened

Federal agents took Thomas Markle into custody on Friday morning at the senior living community where he lives in Lakeland, Florida, near Tampa. The arrest was first reported by the Daily Mail and confirmed by two people familiar with the case who spoke to the Associated Press, and by a Justice Department official who spoke to Reuters. The FBI carried out the arrest.

The Justice Department announced the charge on Friday: one count of possession of child pornography, filed by prosecutors in the Central District of California. First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli said Markle is accused of holding material that included photographs of himself with girls who were minors. The department said the photographs were kept in two storage units in the Los Angeles area that Markle had rented for close to twenty years. He is expected to appear before a federal judge in Tampa on Friday and has not yet entered a plea.

Markle has denied the claims. He told the Daily Mail they were untrue and called them “sick lies”, saying he was shocked and hurt that his son had made the accusations. He also said the computer equipment at the centre of the case had not been in his hands since he left Mexico with his son in 2025.

The arrest follows weeks of investigation across three countries. In October, Markle’s son, Thomas Markle Jr., told Britain’s Sun newspaper that he had found boxes of indecent images of children at his father’s former home in Cebu, in the Philippines, and had handed them to police there and to the FBI. Philippine police said three memory cards and a mobile phone handed over by the son contained abuse material. The country’s interior secretary, Jonvic Remulla, said investigators had recovered around 7,500 photographs and one video from devices linked to the older Markle. Across the border in Mexico, officers searched a storage unit near Rosarito that Markle had rented, acting on a tip from an unnamed caller.

In October, Meghan said the reports of abuse images found at her father’s former home left her “deeply distressed”. A spokesperson for the duchess told CNN she had no comment on the arrest. Father and daughter have not spoken in years — Markle was absent from her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.

Why it matters

The arrest turns a family rift that has played out in public for years into a federal criminal case. For the royal family it is a painful moment: the father of the Duchess of Sussex now faces a charge that carries serious prison time, and the case has already drawn in police in three countries.

It is the second major court case involving a public figure in as many days: on Thursday, a London jury found actor Russell Brand guilty of rape and three sexual assaults — a verdict that, like this arrest, followed allegations first made years earlier. The Philippine side of the inquiry is still open, and it has widened. Remulla said this week that Markle Jr., 60, is now a person of interest after witnesses said underage girls had been brought to his home in Cebu. He stressed that the younger Markle is not a suspect, and that investigators expect to decide within a week whether he was involved in any crime. Philippine police have urged caution, saying they must still establish where the files came from and who is responsible.

The case also shows how far the material is said to have travelled. Investigators say images were found in the Philippines, in a storage unit in Mexico and in units in Los Angeles, which is why prosecutors in California brought the charge.

What happens next

Markle’s first court appearance is expected in Tampa on Friday, where a judge will deal with bail and set the next dates. Prosecutors in California will then have to present their case, and Markle will enter a plea. If convicted, he faces a federal prison sentence.

The Philippine investigation continues separately. Remulla said a decision on Markle Jr.’s role is expected within a week, and police there are still examining the devices and the laptop found at the Cebu home. The FBI said in October that it would support the Philippine authorities and investigate any related breaches of US law — a promise that Friday’s arrest now appears to carry out.

It is one of several high-profile court cases this week: in Hong Kong, democracy activist Joshua Wong was sentenced to ten more years in prison on Thursday. Read our report: https://worldpulsewire.com/2026/11/05/joshua-wong-jailed-10-more-years/
